“Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it.” Marian Wright Edelman

Marian Wright Edelman is a renown children’s advocate. As an African American woman, she made signficant contributions as a civil rights activist, lawyer and author. She has written, generously, about her famous mentors in Laterns: a Memoir of Mentors. Her statement that education should enable us to leave our communities and the world better than we found it, is a strong proto-womanist sentiment. African descended women use womanist frameworks to explore “strength within community.”
